6 Dead, Including Suspect, After Series of Killings Shakes Michigan

A tragic multi-scene shooting spree across rural Missaukee County, Michigan, left five victims dead, one critically injured, and suspect Chad Hickman deceased.

On Friday, August 14, 2026, emergency dispatchers received reports of a shooting at a home on South LaChance Road in Lake Township. Michigan State Police troopers arrived around 11:40 a.m. EDT and discovered three individuals dead and another critically wounded. The surviving victim was rushed to a local hospital for emergency treatment.

Missaukee County lies approximately 169 miles northwest of Detroit. The rural community quickly became the focal point of an intensive multi-agency investigation. State and local law enforcement secured multiple locations while processing physical evidence.

Multi-Scene Shootings Devastate Missaukee County

Law enforcement officers responded to three distinct crime scenes across rural Missaukee County following an initial emergency dispatch on August 14, 2026.

The violent spree spread rapidly across dispersed locations within the county. After responding to the initial scene on South LaChance Road, troopers identified 39-year-old Chad Preston Hickman as the primary suspect. Hickman fled the scene before law enforcement arrived.

While searching for the fleeing suspect, officers located a fourth deceased victim at a second residence. Police warned the public via social media that Hickman was armed and dangerous. Residents were advised not to approach the suspect or his vehicle.

Public court documents indicate suspect Chad Preston Hickman faced recent misdemeanor convictions and ongoing domestic dissolution prior to the incident.

Hickman was a resident of the Lake City and Jennings area in northern Michigan. Court filings indicate he had undergone divorce proceedings a while before the shooting spree. These domestic stressors coincided with a history of involvement in the legal system.

According to Detroit News, in September 2024, Hickman pleaded guilty to fourth-degree child abuse and contributing to the delinquency of a minor. He received a 365-day county jail sentence for those misdemeanor counts, which originated from a 2010 incident.

Authorities have not formally established whether these prior cases are directly linked to the motive behind the August 14 killings.

The search intensified when police spotted Hickman’s white pickup truck near a wooded area by Whitlock Lake. Specialized emergency, aviation, and canine units searched the dense terrain. Officers discovered Hickman and a fifth victim deceased in the woods.

The discovery brought the total death toll to six, including the gunman. Michigan State Police Lt. Ashley Miller called the event heartbreaking for the community and challenging for investigators. Lt. Miller emphasized that state police remained committed to conducting a thorough multi-scene investigation.

Governor Gretchen Whitmer said she was briefed on the situation. Whitmer expressed her condolences to the victims, their families, and the Missaukee community. Authorities asked residents to avoid all three crime scenes while forensic processing continued.

Although nonfatal firearm violence dropped 72% from 1993 to 2023, lethal incidents in rural communities remain a persistent public safety concern. Rural firearm suicides also accounted for over 75% of total rural gun deaths in 2024, with a rate of 12.5 per 100,000.
