Two Dead After Military Helicopter Crashes and Catches Fire in Texas

A fatal military helicopter crash in Central Texas has claimed the lives of two service members and sparked an uncontrolled wildfire.

On August 12, 2026, an AH-64 Apache attack helicopter based at Fort Hood crashed into an open field near Salado, Texas. The accident occurred around 1:35 p.m. local time, and both pilots on board were pronounced dead at 2:30 p.m.

While the aircraft avoided hitting civilian structures, the violent impact ignited a fast-spreading grass fire along Farm-to-Market Road 2843. Emergency crews quickly closed the impassable roadway and initiated localized evacuations for nearby residents.

Emergency Response and Active Investigation

Military officials and emergency teams quickly secured the Salado crash site as military investigators launched an inquiry into the cause.

Our immediate priority is securing the site and supporting the initial response efforts,stated Brig. Gen. Ethan Diven, acting commanding general. He emphasized that military leadership remains focused on supporting the fallen crew members’ families while awaiting detailed findings.

Cliff Coleman, a spokesperson for the Bell County Sheriff’s Office, described the crash scene as a severe impact in open terrain. “It crashed into a field, and you could tell it was a violent crash,” Coleman noted during initial operational updates.

The Fort Hood Criminal Investigation Division took primary charge of investigating the flight’s origin, intended flight path, and potential mechanical or environmental causes.

The AH-64 Apache is the Army’s premier attack helicopter, designed for complex combat environments but subject to low-altitude operational hazards.

Operating with a two-person crew, the twin-engine Apache places the co-pilot gunner in the front seat and the command pilot in the rear. The modernized AH-64E variant carries up to 16 AGM-114 Hellfire missiles, 76 2.75-inch Hydra 70 rockets, and 1,200 rounds for its nose-mounted 30mm M230 chain gun.

First deployed in 1984, the Apache fleet has undergone extensive modernization and is scheduled to remain operational through 2050. The platform operates effectively in obscured battlefield conditions at ranges reaching five miles.

Safety reviews indicate that human error contributes to about 80% of all manned Army aviation mishaps. An evaluation of recent Class A incidents cited 24 skill errors, 12 judgment errors, and 3 intentional procedural deviations.

Over the first six months of this fiscal year, we’ve seen a troubling trend with our accident rates,” noted Maj. Gen. Walter Rugen during a safety briefing. Defense analysts point to reduced flight hours and instructor shortages across active aviation units.

Former warrant officer Joe Roland observed that experience shortfalls persist across units, making rapid safety turnarounds challenging. Spatial disorientation during night-vision flights in degraded visual environments remains the single leading hazard.
