Anna Faris has found herself having conversations with her teenage son that are far removed from the world she grew up in, and instead of avoiding the differences, she is choosing to talk them through.
During an August 20 appearance on Chelsea Handler’s Dear Chelsea podcast, Faris opened up about 14-year-old Jack, her son with ex-husband Chris Pratt. Faris said she did not grow up religious, while Jack has become deeply interested in Christianity and has even asked his mother to accept Jesus Christ as her savior.
The discussion eventually moved beyond faith and into politics, with Faris describing conversations about issues such as abortion and conservative viewpoints. She said she does not simply tell Jack that he is wrong; instead, she asks questions designed to make him think about why he believes what he believes.
What makes the story stand out is that Faris is not describing a rebellious teenager or a family falling apart, she is describing a mother and son learning how to disagree without shutting each other out.
Jack Asked His Mom to Accept Jesus
The conversation took an unexpected turn when Faris revealed that Jack has actually tried to persuade her to become Christian.
Faris told Handler that she is not religious because she did not grow up with religion. Jack, however, has developed a strong interest in Christianity and asked his mother to “accept Jesus Christ” as her savior. Faris said she told him she would do anything for him, but made it clear that accepting such a major belief would involve plenty of discussion.
Her response was not an outright rejection. Instead, she suggested that a decision like that would require “a whole lot of long conversations,” a remark that captures their unusual dynamic.
Jack is apparently comfortable enough with his mother to challenge her beliefs directly, while Faris feels comfortable enough to challenge his right back.

Faris Pushes Back on His Political Ideas
Religion is only part of the disagreement; Faris has also been questioning some of the political ideas her son is developing.
One subject she raised with Jack was the abortion debate. Faris said she asked him whether being pro-life could be considered a “luxury,” encouraging him to consider how someone’s circumstances might affect the way they approach the issue. Rather than ending the discussion, Jack was apparently willing to think about the question.
Faris also talked with him about religious institutions and what she sees as hypocrisy among some “mega pastors.” She said she appreciates that Jack himself can recognize hypocrisy and question whether religious leaders always practice what they preach.
That detail is important because Faris is not presenting her son as someone who accepts everything he hears. In her telling, Jack can already question parts of the religious world he is becoming interested in. Her goal seems less about changing his mind and more about making sure he understands that belief is not beyond examination.
She Has High Praise for Her Son
Despite their disagreements, Faris spoke remarkably warmly about Jack and described him as emotionally strong and difficult to rattle.
On Chelsea Handler’s Dear Chelsea podcast, she called him “solid as a tugboat, emotionally,” explaining that he handles situations well and doesn’t easily get upset. That description paints a very different picture from a parent desperately trying to control a teenager’s worldview.
Faris seems to admire that Jack can have serious conversations without immediately becoming defensive. She also seems encouraged that he is willing to question religious institutions rather than accepting every claim simply because it comes from someone associated with Christianity.
That may be one reason she feels comfortable challenging him herself. If Jack is going to develop strong opinions, Faris believes he should also learn to defend and examine them. In other words, she is not asking him to stop thinking; she is asking him to think harder.

Chris Pratt’s Influence Adds Context

Jack’s religious upbringing also has a family history that makes his beliefs less surprising.
Jack was born prematurely in 2012 and experienced serious medical complications. Chris Pratt has spoken publicly about how his son’s difficult start in life strengthened his own Christian faith. Pratt has remained outspoken about Christianity, although he has also pushed back against some assumptions about his specific political or religious affiliations.
Faris and Pratt divorced in 2017 and have since built separate families. Pratt married Katherine Schwarzenegger in 2019, while Faris married cinematographer Michael Barrett in 2021. Faris and Barrett have also become parents to a blended family, with Barrett’s daughter Margot part of their household.
That background gives Jack exposure to different family environments and perspectives as he grows older.
The Internet Has Turned the Conversation Into a Bigger Debate
Faris’ comments have sparked a much larger discussion online about religion, parenting, and what happens when children develop political beliefs their parents do not share.
A discussion in Reddit’s PopCultureChat community attracted more than 7,800 upvotes, while a separate Fauxmoi discussion passed 9,900, showing just how strongly people have reacted to the story.
The reactions are sharply divided. Some commenters criticize Pratt’s religious and political influence and worry about what Jack is being exposed to. Others say Faris is handling the situation exactly as a parent should by listening to her son while encouraging him to question what he hears.
Another discussion focused on something that can easily get lost in the headlines: Faris did not insult her son or describe him as out of control. In fact, several commenters praised her for allowing him to develop his own beliefs while still challenging his assumptions.
The debate is therefore not simply about whether Jack is religious or conservative. It is about whether parents should challenge their children’s ideas or give them complete freedom to develop without interference.
A Complicated Family Dynamic

Faris’ comments also offer a glimpse into how complicated parenting can become once children begin forming identities separate from their parents.
Jack is old enough to have strong opinions but still young enough to be influenced by the adults and communities around him. Faris appears to recognize both sides of that reality.
She respects his intelligence and emotional maturity, but refuses to step aside when she believes an issue deserves another perspective. That balance is not necessarily easy, particularly when religion and politics become involved.
And perhaps that is why the story has generated so much discussion.
A mother who did not grow up religious is now being asked by her teenage son to accept Jesus, while she responds by asking him to examine his own beliefs more closely.
If your teenager developed strong religious or political beliefs that were very different from your own, would you challenge them the way Anna Faris does, or would you believe it is better to let them find their own way without interference?
