President Donald Trump marked the start of the back-to-school season by promising families a major overhaul of the American education system.
Speaking at a White House event on Monday, the president highlighted his administration’s aggressive push for school choice, pledging to put parents firmly back in charge of how and where their children are educated. Joined by Education Secretary Linda McMahon, parents, and students, the administration rolled out details on new financial incentives designed to break up what they called a failing public education monopoly.
The event outlined sweeping tax credits aimed at empowering families while actively working to remove ideological curricula from classrooms across the country.
The Push for Parental Control
The centerpiece of the administration’s pitch is the belief that parents, rather than the federal government, are best equipped to make educational decisions.
During his Rose Garden remarks, President Trump argued that despite massive federal spending on public education, student outcomes remain poor and families desperately need alternative schooling options. He emphasized that parents should be the primary decision-makers, noting that they are the ones who truly love their children and therefore should dictate their educational path.
The president also underscored the administration’s ongoing efforts to eliminate what he characterized as far-left extremism and radical ideologies from public school curricula.
He stressed the importance of giving every parent the financial power to send their child to a high-quality school that genuinely aligns with their family’s values.
Expanding the Education Freedom Tax Credit
To make school choice financially viable for more families, the administration is heavily promoting a massive expansion of educational tax benefits.
President Trump placed significant focus on the newly established Education Freedom Tax Credit. Beginning in 2027, the program will offer taxpayers a credit of up to $1,700 for eligible donations made to specialized scholarship-granting organizations.
These organizations will then distribute funds to help cover a variety of education-related expenses, including private school tuition, private tutoring, required school fees, and essential classroom supplies.

The White House estimates that nearly 52 million students nationwide could eventually become eligible for benefits under the new tax credit program.

In addition to the tax credit, the president also highlighted major changes to 529 education savings plans, which now allow families to withdraw up to $20,000 annually for K-12 expenses, effectively doubling the previous withdrawal limit.

Administration officials and guests emphasized the profound real-world impact these financial policies could have on individual households.
Several parents joined the president at the event to share their personal stories regarding school choice. Caleb Griffith, a North Carolina father of five whose family includes two children with special needs, expressed his deep gratitude for the new initiatives.
He explained that the Education Freedom Tax Credit will finally give his children access to the specialized services they need to succeed during their most formative years, reminding the audience that parents only get one chance to properly educate their children.
Following the personal testimonies, Education Secretary Linda McMahon framed the entire initiative as a necessary “hard reset” for American education, designed to return common sense to the classroom.
McMahon noted that the administration is actively steering the focus back to serving students directly, ensuring they are adequately prepared for successful futures free from federal micromanagement.
