People who fly for a living could face a much higher risk of developing certain types of cancers due to their unique working environment.
A brand new Harvard Medical School study suggests that flight attendants and pilots in the United States face the highest risk of radiation-related cancer deaths out of more than five hundred different occupations.
The researchers analyzed millions of death certificates and found significant links to diseases like breast cancer, melanoma, and leukemia. They believe that regular exposure to cosmic radiation high up in the Earth’s atmosphere is likely the primary culprit behind these concerning health statistics.
This fascinating medical discovery might ultimately raise important questions about whether airline workers should receive earlier and more frequent health screenings.
Analyzing Millions of Vital Health Records
To uncover these surprising trends, researchers carefully analyzed data from nearly 13 million death certificates recorded between 2020 and 2024.
Out of those extensive national records, approximately fourteen thousand belonged to pilots, and seven thousand were from flight attendants. The research team specifically looked at mortality rates from various cancers known to have associations with ionizing radiation, according to reports from Health and Me.
They carefully excluded lung cancer from their detailed analysis to prevent smoking habits from potentially confounding their final results.
By focusing strictly on radiation-linked diseases, the scientists were able to isolate the specific health dangers of working at very high altitudes. The team also applied a common adjustment approach to account for other factors like age, sex, and ethnicity that might affect overall mortality.
The study’s final data showed that roughly 6.9% of flight attendant deaths were linked to these specific radiation-related cancers. Pilots experienced a very similar rate of about 6.7%, which was significantly higher than the rates found in any other profession.
Even nuclear technologists, who are routinely exposed to radiation from non-cosmic sources, placed much lower on the overall risk list. For cancers not related to radiation exposure, the mortality rates for aviation professionals were completely comparable to other standard occupations.
This strongly suggests that lifestyle factors alone are probably not making these individuals more likely to develop cancer.
The Dangers of Cosmic Radiation
As aircraft travel high up in the atmosphere, the people inside are constantly exposed to ionizing cosmic radiation that originates from the sun and deep space.
Each year, commercial airline workers receive an estimated dose of three to six millisieverts of this invisible radiation while performing their daily job duties. To put that into perspective, a person who takes 10 cross-country round trips annually absorbs only about 0.4 millisieverts, according to a Time article.
This means that dedicated airline workers might receive roughly eight to fifteen times the annual cosmic radiation exposure of a frequent leisure traveler.
Study author Anupam Jena noted that this risk is thought to be cumulative over the course of a long aviation career. The more time a person spends exposed to that cosmic radiation, the greater the potential increase in their overall cancer risk.

While the increase in risk is considered meaningful enough for the occupational group as a whole, it does not necessarily predict the fate of every individual worker. The study mostly highlights a clear statistical association rather than definitively proving that the radiation directly caused each specific cancer death.
Potential Changes for Aviation Workers

These concerning new health findings could prompt federal agencies to reconsider how they protect and monitor the people who spend their working lives in the sky.
The Federal Aviation Administration already formally recognizes pilots and flight attendants as workers who are occupationally exposed to ionizing radiation regularly. However, unlike air crews in several European countries, aviation professionals in the United States are currently not subject to any strict federal dose limits.
There is also no current mandate requiring that their daily cosmic radiation exposure be consistently monitored by their employers.
Jena suggested that the level of medical screening for these particular workers might need to be significantly higher than it is today. Making sure these dedicated individuals are screened regularly and perhaps much earlier in life could possibly help catch potential diseases sooner.
For the average person who simply flies frequently for business or pleasure, the researchers noted that these findings should probably be less concerning. Very few regular passengers ever accumulate the massive amount of total flight time that professional pilots and flight attendants do over a full career.
The study is truly meant to serve as a consideration for the professionals who dedicate their entire lives to navigating the atmosphere.
Acknowledging the Study Limitations
While the research provides valuable insights, the authors noted several important limitations that must be carefully considered when interpreting the overall results.
Because the study was purely observational, the findings cannot establish a strict causal link between cosmic radiation and elevated cancer mortality. The scientists were only able to determine that the two factors were statistically associated within the large population dataset they utilized.
Furthermore, the researchers did not have direct access to precise data regarding the individual radiation exposure levels of each specific worker. This lack of detailed tracking means they could not determine if those with the greatest absolute exposure actually faced the highest mortality risks.
Other occupational or lifestyle factors that were not fully accounted for could also potentially contribute to the health patterns observed in the study.
Future studies will likely need to incorporate personalized dosimetry data to fully understand exactly how this cosmic radiation impacts human health over time.
