With so many choices flying under the radar, eating becomes reactive. Snacks are grabbed not because hunger has spoken, but because the brain has already answered a question you did not realize it asked.

Your Environment Is Set Up to Overfeed You

Field experiments conducted by ScienceDirect found that people served themselves more when using larger bowls or serving spoons. Most participants denied that portion size influenced them, even as intake increased.

Reviews in the Annual Review of Nutrition show that packaging, plate size, and food visibility can increase consumption without conscious notice. The increase is estimated at roughly 18 to 25 percent. In this landscape, every counter and cupboard becomes a suggestion.

Boredom Makes Food Feel Like Something to Do
