Amazon’s Drone Delivery Dream Takes Off, But Packages Are Landing in Pools

Amazon is finally giving Jeff Bezos’ 13-year-old drone-delivery dream a massive push, announcing plans to expand Prime Air to nearly 500 U.S. cities and towns by the end of 2026.

The expansion would increase Amazon’s current drone-delivery footprint roughly sixfold and bring the service to tens of millions of potential customers. Prime Air is already operating in seven states, with delivery sites around Phoenix, Tampa, Kansas City, Omaha, Baton Rouge, Detroit, Houston, San Antonio, Dallas and Waco. Amazon says each operating location can cover roughly 175 square miles.

The company plans to launch in additional metropolitan areas including Chicago, Syracuse, Cleveland, Atlanta and Boise, with more communities expected later in the year. Amazon says it has already completed hundreds of thousands of drone deliveries in 2026, while Prime Air executive David Carbon expects the service to reach about 1 million deliveries this year.

Yet the announcement’s timing created an awkward contrast. Just as Amazon was celebrating its biggest drone expansion yet, a video emerged showing one of its aircraft dropping a customer’s package directly into a swimming pool.

A Texas Customer Watched Her Package Take a Swim

For Lindsey Austen of Richmond, Texas, the arrival of an Amazon drone was supposed to be a glimpse of the future, but the delivery quickly became something much more memorable.

Austen received an alert that her order was being delivered by drone. She had not specifically requested the unusual delivery method, but when she heard the aircraft buzzing outside, she grabbed her phone and went to watch. She captured the drone hovering above her backyard before it opened its compartment and released the package.

The box missed the intended landing area and dropped into her swimming pool. Inside were dry cat food and shoe insoles. The items were reportedly soaked but undamaged, and the entire delivery took only about 20 minutes, an impressive delivery time spoiled by an unfortunate landing.

Austen’s reaction captured the human side of the technology. After watching her package splash into the water, she said she was shocked and did not think she would want another drone delivery.

The Pool Was Not the First Water Mishap

What happened in Texas might have looked like an isolated comedy clip, except similar water-related incidents have reportedly happened before.

The Verge has documented other Prime Air problems involving pools and ponds, including an Arizona incident in which a package ended up in water after the drone’s propeller wash affected its landing. Another delivery reportedly left a package near a pond and then into the water.

Those incidents raise a surprisingly complicated engineering problem. Amazon’s drones are designed to identify obstacles and determine whether a delivery area is safe. Still, a swimming pool is not necessarily an obstacle in the same way a person, vehicle, or building is.

Wind can also complicate the final few seconds of a delivery. A lightweight package being released from the aircraft is vulnerable to movement caused by the drone itself or surrounding conditions.

Previous Prime Air incidents have reportedly included contact with a crane, an internet cable, and an apartment building, adding to questions about how the technology performs in unpredictable environments.

Amazon Says the System Is Built for Safety

The pool videos are getting attention, but Amazon says its drones use sophisticated technology designed specifically to prevent dangerous encounters.

The company’s MK30 aircraft uses cameras, sensors, and a Detect-and-Avoid system to monitor its surroundings. Amazon says the system checks for obstacles and other hazards and that the cameras are used for navigation and safe delivery rather than being watched through a live feed by an employee.

The aircraft can carry packages weighing up to five pounds, while Amazon says roughly 60% of the products customers most frequently order are eligible for drone delivery. Those products include groceries, medications, cosmetics, electronics and household goods.

Most deliveries are expected to take around an hour, although Amazon advertises delivery in as little as 30 minutes. The service is designed primarily for suburban areas, where drones have more room to operate than they would in dense urban environments.

Amazon’s Biggest Test May Be the Neighborhood

Getting customers to accept drones could prove just as important as getting the aircraft to deliver accurately.

In Metro Detroit, Amazon already operates facilities in Hazel Park and Pontiac, where drones have delivered tens of thousands of packages. Customers can select an approved delivery location on their property, such as a front yard, driveway, or backyard.

But some residents have complained about the noise. In Hazel Park, residents have described frequent low-flying drones as disruptive, with some comparing the sound to a flying leaf blower. In nearby Ferndale, officials have received noise complaints and explored what, if anything, the city can do, although drone airspace falls largely under federal jurisdiction.

Not everyone is bothered. Some Michigan residents have described the drones as interesting or simply another form of neighborhood background noise. Amazon says most community feedback has been positive and that fewer than 1% of Prime Air customer-service inquiries this year have concerned noise.

Bezos first unveiled the idea of Amazon delivering packages by drone in 2013, imagining orders arriving within 30 minutes.

The original vision took far longer than expected. Amazon spent years developing aircraft, testing autonomous systems, and navigating regulatory requirements before receiving approval to expand beyond visual line of sight. The company’s current Prime Air system is built around the idea that autonomous aircraft can eventually become another part of its enormous delivery network.

Amazon is not attempting to replace its delivery vans with drones. Prime Air is being added alongside conventional delivery methods, same-day fulfillment and other rapid-delivery services. CEO Andy Jassy has said Amazon wants Prime Air to serve 30 million customers by the end of this year and ultimately deliver hundreds of millions of packages annually.

The ambition is enormous. Amazon’s proposed expansion is also arriving as Walmart and other companies pursue their own drone-delivery strategies, turning aerial delivery into a growing competition rather than a science-fiction experiment.

The Technology Has to Earn Trust

The Texas pool incident is funny because nobody was hurt, but it also exposes the kind of small failure that could determine whether customers trust autonomous delivery.

Amazon says drone mishaps are rare and that it uses incidents to improve the system. The company also points customers to its A-to-z Guarantee, which can provide refunds or replacements when deliveries go wrong.

That reassurance matters because Prime Air is moving toward a much larger audience. A system making hundreds of thousands of deliveries can afford occasional mistakes only if those mistakes remain genuinely rare and are quickly corrected.

The challenge is not simply getting a drone from point A to point B. It is making sure the aircraft understands the difference between a safe drop zone and a swimming pool, between a clear backyard and a dangerous obstacle, and between convenient technology and an unwanted nuisance.

Amazon has spent years teaching machines how to fly; the next challenge is teaching them how to understand the messy reality of people’s backyards.
