The founders of Hooters are officially producing a brand new independent movie inspired by the unlikely beginnings of the famous restaurant chain.
The upcoming film is described as a hilarious buddy comedy and an inspiring biographical picture that follows the real events behind the company’s inception. Production is scheduled to begin in November 2026, with filming primarily taking place in Florida.
This exciting cinematic announcement arrives just months after the company’s chief executive officer revealed ongoing efforts to reestablish the brand as a welcoming neighborhood destination.
A Cinematic Origin Story
According to Deadline, a recent press release says the highly anticipated movie tells the captivating story of two friends who accidentally launch a national restaurant empire.
The plot specifically follows two friends from Iowa, Ted and Lenny, as they embark on a wild journey to the state of Florida. Ted is absolutely determined to find a specific girl named Diane who he previously saw featured in a popular spring break television commercial.
He manages to successfully convince Lenny to join him on an unpredictable road trip all the way down to Clearwater Beach to track her down. The official press release explicitly notes that Diane would ultimately become the very first Hooters Girl in the massive company’s long history.
Casting director Catherine Stroud described the upcoming feature film as a classic American success story that centers on a group of completely unsuspecting heroes. Meanwhile, director Jon Rosenbaum praised the script for perfectly showcasing the crazy idea and wild journey that miraculously birthed the iconic hospitality brand.
Behind the Independent Production
The upcoming cinematic project is being independently produced by several of the founders who actually lived through the restaurant’s chaotic early days.
Ed Droste, a cofounder of the chain and a producer on the film, expressed his immense excitement about bringing this unique historical story to the big screen. He firmly believes that audiences are going to thoroughly enjoy watching how a group of guys who had absolutely no idea what they were doing managed to build something massive.
Droste also co-wrote the official script for the upcoming movie, actively ensuring that the central storyline remains completely authentic to the brand’s unique corporate history. He playfully noted that the world-famous waitresses are the real stars of the project, promising to deliver a genuine taste of their big-hearted culture to eager audiences worldwide.
The director also enthusiastically teased that the final cinematic product will completely subvert general audience expectations while remaining mostly true to the actual historical events.
The independent production essentially aims to capture the specific famous humor that helped the ambitious chain grow from a single restaurant in 1983 into a global cultural phenomenon.

Reclaiming the Brand Identity
The movie announcement strategically aligns with recent corporate efforts spearheaded by CEO Neil Kiefer to significantly overhaul the restaurant’s modern public image.
Kiefer, who originally joined the growing brand as its attorney back in 1983, successfully took over as the chief executive officer in 1992. He recently explained to reporters that private equity firms had previously taken over certain locations when the original owners sold the intellectual property rights in 2001.
According to the passionate executive, this massive shift in corporate ownership allowed the beloved chain to stray further and further away from what the brand originally stood for.
After finally reacquiring the intellectual property in the fall of 2025, Kiefer and the original owners immediately began working to aggressively improve the brand’s overall creative direction.
He quickly pointed out several specific operational changes they urgently needed to fix, including actively restoring the correct sauce recipes that had been altered by previous management. Most notably, he harshly criticized the previous management for altering the classic waitress uniforms, essentially replacing the original athletic running shorts with garments that closely resembled thongs.
A Return to Neighborhood Roots
The corporate leadership team is now heavily focused on actively making the dining establishments much more friendly and welcoming to all types of everyday customers.
Kiefer strongly emphasized that the highly sexualized uniforms pushed by previous corporate owners were absolutely never the intention when the restaurant concept first started decades ago. He maintains that while there is absolutely nothing inherently wrong with properly fitted shorts, the overly revealing modifications were completely inappropriate for a casual family dining environment.
When asked directly about making the national chain more family-friendly, the executive insisted that they have always sincerely strived to maintain that specific welcoming atmosphere. He acknowledged the restaurant’s famous name originated from a Steve Martin comedy routine, defending it as an acceptable double entendre that unfortunately became overly sexualized over the last twenty years.
Today, he firmly defines the popular establishment as a relaxing, beach-themed neighborhood place heavily centered around good food, cold drinks, and excellent customer service.
The reinvigorated company hopes that both the upcoming movie and the recent operational changes will quickly remind families, couples, and singles why the brand initially became a beloved American staple.
Question for you. Do you think a movie about how Hooters got started would make you see the restaurant chain differently?
