Kehlani Thought She Was Doing Everything Right for Her Health. Then She Was Hospitalized and ‘Not Cleared to Sing’

The Kehlani World Tour had only been underway for three weeks when an unexpected health issue forced the singer to step away from the stage.

After two days off, during which she said she felt completely normal, the 31-year-old artist spent the night of Aug. 25 unable to swallow and in severe pain. By the next morning, she had gone to the hospital.

On Aug. 26, Kehlani shared that she had been released but was not medically cleared to perform, leading to cancellations of two tour dates in New Jersey and Maryland. The update came shortly after she had spoken about the careful routine she relies on to maintain her health while navigating the demands of her career.

Her comments highlighted a reality many performers face: preparation can support the body, but it cannot guarantee unexpected setbacks won’t happen.

A Night That Arrived Without Warning

She’d spent two days off feeling fine. Then, overnight, she couldn’t swallow.

“After two off days feeling completely normal, I’ve been up all night unable to swallow & in so much pain,” Kehlani wrote on Instagram. “I just left the hospital & am not cleared to sing for the next two shows. I’m so sorry.”

The affected performances were scheduled for Aug. 26 in Camden, New Jersey, and Aug. 27 at Merriweather Post Pavilion in Columbia, Maryland. Kehlani referred to the canceled stops as “Camden & DC” and told fans the tour would continue, writing, “We will pick back up in Virginia.”

The next planned performance was set for Aug. 29 at Allianz Amphitheater at Riverfront in Richmond.

At the time of her announcement, she had not shared any rescheduling information, refund details, or an additional recovery timeline. The immediate issue was simple: her doctors had not cleared her to use her voice onstage.

What She Said Instead of a Diagnosis

Kehlani did not share a diagnosis, treatment plan, or explanation for what caused the sudden illness.

Instead, she focused on the frustration of doing everything she could to protect her health and still facing an unexpected interruption. “Breaks my heart to have to ever do this. I do everything I’m supposed to to ensure my health stays up to par & it still isn’t guaranteed,” she continued on Instagram.

The phrase “not cleared to sing” also made clear that the cancellations were based on medical guidance rather than a personal choice. She wanted to perform, but she was not cleared to do so.

Kehlani has previously spoken publicly about being diagnosed with bipolar disorder and borderline personality disorder. She did not connect those diagnoses to this specific physical episode, and no connection has been established.

The Routine She Called Non-Negotiable

Six days before the hospital visit, she had been specific about what staying well actually costs.

In a Billboard cover story published Aug. 20, Kehlani discussed the daily practices she considers essential while managing a demanding career and her bipolar disorder diagnosis.

“I am clinically diagnosed as bipolar. I take medicine. I have to go to the gym; it’s not an option. I have to do yoga, take walks. I have to spend time in nature: sit in the park or go wiggle my toes in somebody’s grass. I have to build a relationship with God. I have to pray.”

She described those habits as requirements rather than occasional choices. They form part of the structure she depends on while balancing recording, touring, and public life.

The timing of the hospitalization added another layer to that conversation. Even with a routine built around wellness, an unexpected physical problem could still interrupt the schedule.

She also described the music industry’s default work cycle. It doesn’t always leave room for recovery.

In the Billboard Interview, Kehlani explained that the pace of making music can easily push artists into unhealthy rhythms. “You get in this cycle where you wake up at 6 p.m. because you were at the studio until 7 a.m. You’ve missed a whole day of sunshine. There’s no meal. You go back to the studio at 8 p.m. You grind or die.”

“I have to have a routine supporting my wellness so I can freaking survive,” she said. Touring can intensify those challenges. Performers often move between cities every few days while managing late nights, changing schedules, and the physical demands of performing live.

For Kehlani, the routine she described was not about perfection. It was about creating stability inside a career built around constant change.

Kehlani entered this run after surgery she hoped would finally clear a seven-year physical obstacle.

Before the tour began on Aug. 6, Kehlani shared that she had undergone nasal and sinus surgery to address a long-running breathing issue. She said she had struggled with the problem for about seven years and described her nasal canals as being about 98% blocked because of swollen turbinates, a deviated septum, and a blockage affecting the right side of her sinus system.

She emphasized that the procedure was not cosmetic, and she also said recurring sinus infections had previously forced her to cancel commitments.

The surgery was meant to help remove a barrier she had dealt with for years. But the late August hospitalization was a separate incident, and Kehlani has not said there was any connection between the two.

Earlier in the tour, at a Milwaukee performance on Aug. 7, she told the crowd she had experienced vocal difficulty on opening night in Minneapolis and briefly worried about whether she could continue.

For Ticket Holders, Answers Are Still Pending

The tour is scheduled to continue through early October, but two dates remain uncertain.

The Kehlani World Tour launched in support of her self-titled album, released in April. The project debuted at No. 1 on the Top R&B Albums chart and reached the top five of the Billboard 200.

The tour is scheduled to conclude in San Francisco in early October. For fans who held tickets to the canceled Camden and Maryland shows, Kehlani had not announced details about possible rescheduling or refunds after her update.

Her team said it was working on a solution, while her next planned stop remained Richmond on Aug. 29.

The situation also brought renewed attention to something Kehlani had already explained: maintaining a wellness routine can be a powerful part of handling a demanding career, but it cannot remove every uncertainty that comes with being human.

When you’ve built a genuine routine around your health, and something still goes wrong, how do you decide when to push through and when stopping is the right call?
