The Craziest Food Requests Waitstaff Have Gotten

Waiters and chefs have heard it all. If you have a true food allergy, they want to know, and will often be able to accommodate your needs. But what about if the word comes back to the kitchen that a diner is allergic to any food that’s pink? Yes, that happened, and it wasn’t even Barbiecore related! Here are some outrageous food requests. Would you dare ask for these?

Helicopter Delivery

Let’s just say this was not your typical Door Dash. According to a Food & Wine article, nearly two decades ago, a guest at France’s Hotel du Cap-Eden-Roc craved a Tropezienne tarte for dessert, a delicacy only available in St. Tropez, 60 miles away. The hotel, eager to fulfill the request, dispatched a concierge via helicopter to fetch the dessert. While the tarte cost only five euros, the helicopter ride came to a hefty €2,000. Such an extravagant request would be incompatible with the hotel group’s sustainability principles today.

Pizza Requests That Go Beyond Pepperoni

Here are some pizza requests that have come in:

“Vegetarian pizza with no sauce, cheese on the side in a zip lock bag, to go.”

“One vegetarian meat lover pizza please.” At least they said “please”.

“One time I had to cut the crust off of a stuffed crust and box it separate. They must have been surprised at how small the pizza was without the crust. With the crust it’s a 14 inch (large), without crust it must have been like a 10-11 inch (Smaller than a medium). The crust also filled a medium box by itself.” He did at least chew it himself.

“The weirdest order I delivered was a cheese pizza with 4 sides of cinnamon stick icing.”

“Dough and beef. No sauce or cheese. Nasty.”

Pink Food Strikes Again

A server reported that they worked at a “ritzy country club on Cape Cod and this women brought in a paint chip and told me she wanted her cosmopolitan to be the exact same color as her pink paint chip.”

Tom Brady…Thanks A Lot

“I work at a from scratch Italian restaurant. Had a guy come in with his wife and sit at the bar on a busy Saturday night. He informed me he was following the “TB12 diet” from Tom Brady’s new diet and exercise book and had very strict dietary restrictions because of this. He sent me back and forth to the kitchen no less than 7 times to verify with the chef that his dinner order would have no iodized salt, sugar, olive oil, gluten, peppers, or tomatoes (he ended up with a plain piece of fish and some vegetables).

We were getting slammed, but I still tried to keep my patience and accommodate the guy the best I could, even though doing so was putting me in the weeds. After dinner I ask if they would like anything else and don’t you know this guy orders himself a bread pudding (VERY much filled with forbidden gluten and sugar) and eats the whole thing. He just goes ‘well, I mean, you have to allow yourself a treat now and then.’ I died a little more inside.”

“A customer asked me to chew up the food and put it back onto his plate. No medical reason. No missing teeth. Not old. Just creepy as heck. He got very upset when I declined.”

Obviously Not A Vampire

“I used to work at Whole Foods as a juicer and this one guy would come in everyday and order 12 ounces of garlic juice to go (which is like 20 dollars btw). After a couple weeks of seeing him order the same thing I asked him to drink it in front of me because I didn’t believe it was humanly possible to ingest that much garlic. He downed it all in front of me and said this ‘along with much garlic comes much loneliness’. I laughed and he said ‘no seriously I work from home’.”

Bean There

“We had a old woman that would come in and say ‘for every bean I find in my minestrone soup I’m deducting 10 cents from your tip’ even after you explain that it’s pre made she would say that the server has to pull them out. Then she would separate out all the beans and show them to you before she ordered her next bowl and be like ‘look, you lost $2.20 on that bowl’. Not in a nice joking way but a rude bitter mean way. Most servers just gave her as many beans as they could in the bowl.”

Make Up Your Mind: Burger or Steak?

“The guy ordered filet mignon medium rare and sent it back saying it wasn’t cooked. So I seared it again and brought it up to medium. He sent it back and asked us to hand grind a filet and press it into a burger and cook it well and serve it on a bun. He wanted me to take an $18 steak and turn it into a burger, and he had us waste one by overcooking it first. The whole time I was cooking him his filet burger I was thinking, ‘The guy would prefer a burger, why is he insisting on defiling a filet? Also, there’s not enough fat in a filet to be a burger, so this is gonna be dry.’ After he ate it he told the waitress it was overcooked and dry. This is a major reason I have not used my culinary degree professionally in a number of years.”

White Caviar, Please

At Brenners Park-Hotel & Spa in Germany, a guest requested a 250 g can of rare white Almas Caviar (which is really golden in color), requiring a 12-hour drive to Paris to procure it. Additionally, when guests insisted on a specific white wine from Alsace, France, that wasn’t available through suppliers, the hotel’s chef sommelier personally drove to Alsace to obtain it.

There Are Some Foods That DO NOT Go With Ketchup

“Used to be a waiter. Had a family come in and eat. Little boy eventually orders dessert. Vanilla ice cream and ketchup. Yes, he put the ketchup on the ice cream. No, I didn’t stick around to watch. I would’ve thrown up.”

Goats Got It Going On

The same Food & Wine article described a quests visit for afternoon tea at the iconic Palace Elisabeth in Hvar, Croatia. They wanted fresh goat milk instead of regular milk. The hotel’s corporate food and beverage director, Boris Lovrenčić, accommodated by personally driving to a nearby village and milking a goat.
