When Ozempic and Wegovy became household names, food companies had an obvious reason to worry. If people were eating less, they might buy fewer snacks, skip frozen meals, and generally put less food in their carts. Investors noticed, too. Nestlé shares dipped in late 2023 after Walmart’s U.S. CEO said the retailer had seen a slight decrease in food purchases among customers taking appetite-suppressing GLP-1 medications.
Nestlé eventually decided the threat looked more like an opening. Chief technology officer Stefan Palzer says the company is now using artificial intelligence and nutritional science to develop products specifically around the changing needs of people on GLP-1 medicines, turning smaller appetites and new nutritional priorities into a consumer category of their own.
Some of those products are already on shelves.
The more interesting question is whether they solve problems whole foods cannot, or package familiar nutrients for a fast-growing market willing to pay attention.
The Scare That Set Up a New Product Line
It took roughly a year for investor anxiety to become a real frozen-food product.
In May 2024, Nestlé announced Vital Pursuit, a frozen-food line designed as a companion for people using GLP-1 medicines or managing their weight. The initial range included 12 products, including whole grain and protein pasta bowls, sandwich melts, and pizzas. The meals were positioned as high in protein and fiber, with portions intended to suit smaller appetites. CNBC reported prices at $4.99 or less.
Nestlé also made a notable marketing choice. Nestlé deliberately kept “GLP-1” off the packaging, planning instead to make the connection through social media.
What Palzer described this August is much bigger than one freezer-aisle brand. Nestlé is building a broader portfolio strategy around protein, collagen, ingredient patents, and AI-assisted research across multiple brands and markets.
Muscle Loss, Ozempic Face, and What Nestlé Says It Can Do
Nestlé’s product strategy is organized around what rapid weight loss does to the body, not just to the appetite.
“We are well positioned with the portfolio,” Palzer told Reuters. “It’s a huge opportunity for our company.”
One of the company’s biggest areas of interest is lean muscle. “A big part of weight loss is that people lose lean muscle mass,” Palzer added. Nestlé says it has identified a combination of two micronutrients, which it has not publicly named, that could support muscle recovery during rapid weight reduction.
“We found a combination of two micronutrients which we industrialized that stimulate the growth of muscle tissue,” he said. “On one hand you provide protein, on the other hand you stimulate the muscle tissue to grow back faster.”
The strategy also reaches into appearance. Nestlé has added collagen protein to Vital Proteins products, linking the move to concerns involving skin, hair, nails, and facial fat loss. Presentation materials shown to Reuters specifically referenced “Ozempic face,” the facial volume loss that can accompany rapid weight reduction.
Nestlé also mentioned it has patented ingredient combinations intended to curb appetite in people who experience increased hunger after stopping GLP-1 treatment. The company has not publicly identified those ingredients or disclosed the specific patent details.

Shakes, Malt Drinks, and a Market Already in Motion
The products tied to this strategy aren’t waiting for a future launch announcement.
Nestlé’s U.S. business has already introduced Boost Advanced Nutrition Shake, marketed as containing 35 grams of protein to support muscle health during weight loss. In Asia and Indonesia, the company launched Milo PRO High Protein, a higher protein version of its familiar malt drink.
The potential audience is enormous. Boston Consulting Group estimated that roughly 16 million Americans are currently taking GLP-1 medicines, with that figure expected to rise sharply by the end of the decade. Eli Lilly’s Mounjaro and Zepbound and Novo Nordisk’s Wegovy and Ozempic lead the market.
For Nestlé, that shift in eating behavior becomes a question of scale. Even if only a portion of GLP-1 users begin deliberately shopping for protein-heavy shakes, meals, and snacks, the volume could be substantial for a company with Nestlé’s reach.
Inside the AI Steering the Research

Nestlé’s roughly 120,000-recipe database gives it a data advantage most food companies can’t match.
Its internal platform, Food Genie, allows scientists and product developers to predict how recipes may perform and spot opportunities for reformulation. “AI needs data,” Palzer said. “You can imagine if you’re a small company you have only a thousand recipes. It’s very difficult to model and predict recipes using AI.”
Nestlé says the technology also processes scientific literature, simulates how consumers might respond to products before they reach stores, and scans social media for emerging health concerns.

That may prove especially useful in the GLP-1 era, where new consumer worries can travel from doctor’s offices to TikTok to supermarket shelves remarkably fast. Nestlé is effectively using its research operation to decide which concerns have enough staying power to become products.
A Simpler Option Sits in the Produce Aisle
Amanda Avery, an associate professor in nutrition and dietetics at the University of Nottingham, questioned whether foods marketed specifically toward GLP-1 users offer a meaningful advantage over ordinary whole foods.
Meat, fish, eggs, dairy, beans, nuts, and pulses already provide protein and many of the same nutrients, often for less than a specialized shake or supplement.
“It’s quite sad that we turn to new products all the time that are more expensive than whole, fresh food that also contain the same protein and nutrients,” Avery said to Reuters.
She did not dismiss Nestlé’s chances of selling them. “Sadly, we are quite influenced by marketing,” she added. “Nestle will have done their research.”
That is where the most interesting part of this new category sits. Commercial demand and nutritional superiority are not the same thing. Nestlé has not released clinical trial data showing that a specific product prevents muscle loss, restores facial volume, or improves outcomes for GLP-1 users, and it has not publicly identified its proprietary appetite-control ingredients.
For shoppers, that leaves a familiar decision in new packaging: whether convenience, branding, and targeted nutrition claims are worth paying for when much of the nutritional foundation may already be elsewhere in the grocery store.
