A Pennsylvania mother is speaking out after experiencing the shocking moment she learned her newborn son had been exposed to measles while residing in a hospital’s neonatal intensive care unit.
Brittany Nicole Sponenberg, from Danville, spent nearly two months watching over her vulnerable infant in the NICU at Geisinger Medical Center after he was born with underdeveloped lungs and an underdeveloped gut. Last week, she was completely shocked to receive a distressing call from hospital staff notifying her of the viral exposure. The facility’s neonatal ward had unexpectedly become the epicenter of a growing localized outbreak.
Geisinger Medical Center has subsequently updated its strict screening protocols as measles cases across the United States reach staggering new heights.
A Terrifying Discovery
Geisinger Medical Center officially confirmed in a recent press release that an adult visitor entered the Danville NICU between Friday, August 14, and Monday, August 17.
The unnamed individual rapidly developed a severe fever and a noticeable rash on August 17. They officially tested positive for the highly contagious measles virus the very next day. Sponenberg revealed to CNN that she was not personally informed about the dangerous exposure until three full days later.
According to People, by the time she received the terrifying phone call, her fragile son had already been transferred to a completely different medical facility. The distressed mother expressed immense frustration over the delayed communication regarding her child’s health, recalling her sheer disbelief upon hearing the news.
Her son’s doctor carefully explained that while the overall risk of him contracting the actual virus remained relatively low, they still needed to take immediate medical precautions.
To ensure his absolute safety, the medical team determined that the infant would need to receive preventative medication and remain isolated for twenty-eight days.

Under the newly established guidelines, only parents or legal guardians who are completely free of any signs or symptoms of measles will be permitted inside the NICU. These tightened restrictions also apply to the hospital’s nearby children’s wing to prevent any further spread among pediatric patients.
Furthermore, all approved visitors are strongly encouraged to wear protective surgical masks throughout their hospital stay. Dr. Michael Fitzpatrick, Geisinger’s Central Region chief medical officer, released a public statement addressing the newly implemented safety measures.
He explained that the medical teams established these strict entrance screenings to best protect vulnerable patients, dedicated staff members, and visiting families. However, he also stressed that the success of the screening process heavily relies on visitors sharing accurate and complete health information prior to entry.
A Nationwide Rise in Cases
The frightening hospital exposure highlights a much broader national health crisis, as measles cases across the United States have recently hit a thirty-five-year high.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reports that more than 2,500 cases have been documented across 47 different states. This alarming surge occurs as national vaccination coverage drops significantly below the required levels needed to halt the rapid spread of the virus.
As of August 20, there have been 2,777 confirmed cases of the wildly infectious illness this year alone. This staggering number easily surpasses the total number of cases recorded throughout all of 2025, and dwarfs the 285 cases recorded in 2024.
Measles is known as a highly contagious airborne viral infection that can rapidly spread whenever an infected individual coughs or sneezes in a shared space.
