Robert, a 58-year-old architect, canceled his third dating app subscription in the spring. From working tirelessly at work to fending for his kids, Robert is part of a growing trend among older men who are opting to forgo the stress of modern dating and simply remain single. The Pew Research Center estimates that among adults 50 to 64 years old, 30 percent weren’t married or living with a partner at all, and many of them were single and not particularly looking to change that status soon.

Some say it is the desire for independence and the opportunity to explore and develop their interests and hobbies. For others, the difficulties and nuances of modern dating, compounded by the proliferation of choices and utter dearth of quality options, are too much to handle. For some, this decision is an opportunity to define happiness on their own terms—it’s a chance to be happy without having to conform to societal expectations. Below are 15 reasons why this is happening, and I relate every one of them because I believe they all illustrate a very interesting shift in what it means to be a man in the modern world, trying to navigate single life.

Financial Freedom Trumps Romance

Money talks, and for a lot of old men, it’s saying, “stay single.” Recent findings are that divorced men aged over 50 suffer a 21% fall in their standard of living, compared with women’s 45%. The specter of dividing assets once again keeps many older men from committing. Financial independence looks a lot better than sharing bank accounts and alimony checks.

Energy Levels Do Not Match Dating Needs

The effort required by the dating scene demands energy that many older men no longer have. Managing relationship drama, planning the best dates, and keeping up with younger partners’ social schedules can be exhausting.

Many would opt to engage in a hobby, friends, or family rather than to grapple with the intricacies of today’s love affairs. Peace and stability have a stronger appeal than the excitement and pressure of dating.

Technology Barriers Create Dating Frustration

Older men, for the most part, don’t even know what it’s like to learn a new language when swiping left and right. According to statistics, 70% of older men are exhausted with using dating apps, which is considerably higher than the rate among younger men. The pressure to craft a witty, friendly profile and respond to messages promptly, while also maintaining a budding relationship, is always on.

This technology-based learning curve tends to make them feel somewhat disconnected in terms of dating in the present day. As a result, many older men leave online platforms in search of more traditional ways of meeting people.

Past Relationship Trauma Still Stings

For many older men, emotional wounds from previous relationships can cut especially deep. Men also remarry less frequently than women. Data shows that the remarriage rate for men was 27.1 remarriages per 1,000 married men in 2013, down from 45.3 in 1990. The heartache of betrayal, ugly custody battles, or witnessing marriages crumble has lingered.

They might have difficulty trusting new partners or be afraid of making the same mistakes twice. This reluctance tends to raise emotional barriers and make it difficult to connect and engage.

Health Concerns Limit Dating Options

Age brings physical limitations and health concerns, which can affect one’s confidence when dating. According to the Centers for Disease Control, 93% of men in their 60s are living with at least one chronic health condition. Some feel overwhelmed with diabetes, heart disease, or arthritis.

Chronic diseases can also restrict mobility, making it more difficult to partake in social events or activities where new relationships develop. Regardless, countless older individuals can adjust and forge meaningful connections, showing that love and companionship are truly ageless.

Adult Children Take Relationship Priority

Grandchildren and adult children assume the most importance in the lives of many elderly men. A study in The Journals of Gerontology surveyed grandfathers. It determined that those who were invested in their grandchildren— in terms of frequency of contact and the quality of activities shared—reported fewer depressive symptoms and greater levels of positive affect compared with less-engaged individuals. Developing better relationships with kids and being on hand to see them grow provides emotional fulfillment without the headaches of romance.

Career Focus Replaces Relationship Goals

Some older men find new career passions or business endeavors that consume them. Men over 65 now have a 23.4% participation rate, which is filled by older workers taking on more fulfilling jobs than they had before retirement. You have the potential to get lost when you’re dating someone new in the best way possible. You might want to get lost in an entrepreneurial venture, or try your hand at writing a book, or finally give in to those late-night artistic pursuits instead.

They enjoy investing time in themselves, in their personal growth and professional achievements. The change in priorities often results in feeling even “more purpose, happiness, and satisfaction later in life.”

Falling in Love if You Are Grieving a Loss

Widows and widowers and divorcees whose superannuated spouses served them with divorce papers experience grief that overwhelms new relationships. Studies have shown that there is a gender difference; widowed men will take a longer time to be ready for new relationships. Others don’t make it that far for psychological reasons: Comparing new partners to their dead wives feels disloyal to everyone involved, particularly the spouses.

Widowed women, however, often battle guilt or worry about judgment as they ponder plunging back into the dating pool. It is probably hard for each sex to sensibly reopen their hearts, because the healing from a loss is a very personal journey, and experiences differ widely for every person.

Financial Obligations Limit Dating Budgets

Providing for ex-wives, adult children, and aging parents leaves scant cash for dating. According to the Pew Research Center, around 47% of adults ages 50 to 59 have given some financial assistance to a grown child in the past year, and about 27% are the primary financial supporter.

This can be very stressful and may prevent people from spending time on dating, instead favoring the need to take care of their financial obligations. Managing these commitments requires a lot of organization and a clear understanding of your priorities.

Sexual Performance Anxiety Creates Avoidance

Physical changes and performance issues become the biggest hurdles to dating an older man. According to Frontiers, ED affects 20–40% of men between the ages of 60 and 69, and if these estimates are extended to men 70 years of age or older, the prevalence should be closer to 50–100%.

The anxiety to perform s*xually with medication side effects or physical limitations can take the excitement out of a romantic encounter. A lot of men prefer not to have intimate encounters at all rather than be embarrassed or let down.

Hobbies and Interests Give More Satisfaction

Hobbies and interests that are independent of your relationship, which bring you regular joy, are invaluable. Men aged 55 to 64 spent an average of 5.5 hours daily on leisure and sports activities in 2019. That is more leisure time for the older age group.

A round of golf, a day of fishing, reading a book, or lending a helping hand offers a certain pleasure and a sense of doing something beneficial; in sum, good, clean fun. And Rick, a 58-year-old volunteer at the animal shelter he frequents, has felt a more emotional connection with the rescue dogs in his life than any woman he’s ever dated.

16 Grocery Staples to Stock Up On Before Prices Spike Again

I was in the grocery store the other day, and it hit me—I’m buying the exact same things I always do, but my bill just keeps getting higher. Like, I swear I just blinked, and suddenly eggs are a luxury item. What’s going on?

Inflation, supply-chain delays, and erratic weather conditions have modestly (or, let’s face it, dramatically) pushed the prices of staples ever higher. The USDA reports that food prices climbed an additional 2.9% year over year in May 2025—and that’s after the inflation storm of 2022–2023.

So, if you’ve got room in a pantry, freezer, or even a couple of extra shelves, now might be a good moment to stock up on these staple groceries—before the prices rise later.
