Animal shelters are finding new homes for their furry friends in a place you might not expect – malls. As part of an effort to alleviate the burden of increased animal intakes during quarantine, malls across the US are offering empty storefronts to animal rescue groups for free or at a steep discount. The collaborations between malls and animal havens are gaining popularity and have been widely successful in finding homes for pets.

Collaborations between malls and animal havens are gaining popularity, hoping to attract more pet owners and customers to these retail spaces that were already struggling before the pandemic forced temporary closures. According to Alexandra Lange, author of “Meet Me by the Fountain,” moving animal shelters into empty storefronts is just the latest effort by shopping centers to try to lure more customers in.

If you’re looking to adopt a furry friend in the United States, there are many animal rescue leagues and shelters to choose from. The American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (ASPCA) has a database of adoptable animals across the country.

Another national organization, Petfinder, allows you to search for adoptable pets by location, breed, size, age, and more.

Additionally, many local animal shelters and rescue organizations have their own websites and social media pages where they post information about adoptable pets. By adopting an animal, you can help reduce the number of animals in shelters and give a loving home to a pet in need.
