There is quite a history of American Presidents having children and grandchildren out of wedlock, dating back decades to the most current 46th POTUS.
This topic surfaced recently when President Joe Biden acknowledged he has seven, rather than six, grandchildren from his two sons, Beau and Hunter Biden. So we decided to see what company they were in.
Not An Uncommon Situation For Families, Including Presidents
Up until recently, out of respect for the privacy of his son’s ongoing paternity case, the President and the First Lady publicly acknowledged six of their grandchildren, but not the now identified youngest one, Navy Joan Roberts, who was born in 2018 to Hunter Biden and Lunden Roberts, whom Hunter met during his struggle with drug addiction.
Children born to Presidents or their close family members who were not publicly acknowledged as such, is not uncommon. Here are some of the more well-known cases.
Warren Harding
Harding had an affair with Nan Britton, a woman 31 years younger than him, while he was a senator and later president. They had a daughter, Elizabeth, in 1919. Harding never publicly acknowledged her, but paid child support until his death in 1923. A DNA test in 2015 confirmed their relationship.
Thomas Jefferson
Thomas Jefferson had a long-term relationship with Sally Hemings, one of his slaves, after his wife’s death. They had at least six children together, four of whom survived to adulthood. Jefferson never admitted to the affair, but a DNA test in 1998 linked him to one of Hemings’ sons, Eston.
John Tyler
Tyler had 15 children, the most of any president. He fathered eight children with his first wife, Letitia, and seven more with his second wife, Julia, whom he married after Letitia’s death. He was also rumored to have fathered a son, John Dunjee, with one of his slaves, Mariah.
Grover Cleveland
Grover Cleveland had an illegitimate son, Oscar Folsom Cleveland, with Maria Halpin, a widow he met in Buffalo, New York. He acknowledged paternity and paid child support, but also arranged for the child to be adopted by another family. The scandal became public during his first presidential campaign in 1884.
William Henry Harrison
Harrison had six children with one of his slaves, Dilsia, according to some of her descendants. Four of them were sold to a plantation in Georgia. One of them was allegedly the ancestor of Walter Francis White, a civil rights leader and the head of the NAACP.
Andrew Jackson
Andrew Jackson had no biological children with his wife, Rachel, but he adopted several children and served as a guardian for many others. He was also accused of having a son, Andrew Jackson Jr., with one of his slaves, Hannah.
James Buchanan
Buchanan never married and had no known children, but he was rumored to have fathered a son, James Buchanan Henry, with his niece Harriet Lane’s mother. He adopted Henry as his ward and made him his private secretary.
Herbert Hoover
Herbert Hoover had two sons with his wife, Lou Henry Hoover. He also allegedly had an illegitimate daughter, Margaret Hoover Van Winkle, with his secretary Alice Ann Park. Van Winkle claimed that Hoover paid for her education and visited her occasionally.
