We all know we are supposed to eat a nutritious diet for overall health. Does where you live affect your approach to what you eat? Studies show that it does. Different states have different cultures around food that can influence individuals, as well as the population overall. What states overall are eating the healthiest diet, and which are not? How The Study Was Conducted

A recent study conducted by Great Green Wall Health, a health information website, analyzed Google data to identify the top U.S. states with the greatest interest in healthy eating. The study calculated the frequency of 115 common healthy eating searches, ranging from “healthy dinner recipes” to “healthy food near me,” to determine the rankings. Do you live in a healthy state?

Colorado claims the top spot among U.S. states, with an average of 2,114 monthly healthy eating searches per 100,000 residents. The state’s emphasis on promoting a healthy community, culture, and marketplace contributes to its leading position. Notably, Colorado has the third-lowest adult obesity rate in the country, as reported by World Population Review.

Arizona ranks second among states most dedicated to healthy eating. With a population of 7,359,197 people, the state records an average of 140,558 monthly searches for healthy eating. This equates to 19,010 searches per 100,000 residents, the second-highest ratio in the U.S.

Utah

Utah secures the third position with an average of 1,831 monthly searches per 100,000 residents. The state boasts one of the lowest rates of child obesity, according to data from the Annie E. Casey Foundation.

Texas occupies the fourth spot, with an average of 1,822 monthly searches per 100,000 residents. The state is home to numerous healthy food influencers on Instagram, including @cookinwithmima (based in Dallas with 2 million followers) and @onebalancedlife (based in Austin with over 225,000 followers).

New York

New York closely follows in fifth place, with an average of 1,803 monthly searches per 100,000 residents. The most popular searches in New York include “healthy food near me” (33,425 searches) and “healthy restaurants” (27,692 searches) among the estimated population of 19,677,151. However, New Yorkers appear less interested in healthy food delivery, as their least searched term is “healthy fast food near me.”

Massachusetts

Massachusetts ranks sixth, with an average of 1,800 monthly searches per 100,000 residents. The state’s capital, Boston, serves as the base for healthy Instagram influencer @twist_of_lemons, who has 111,000 followers and focuses on sharing easy recipes and promoting realistic health goals. While many people know Boston, they might not be aware that a great portion of Massachusetts is farmland. It is easy to find fresh, local produce.

Florida

Florida secures the seventh position, with an average of 1,789 monthly searches per 100,000 residents. The least searched healthy eating terms in Florida include “healthy chicken salad recipe”, “how to eat healthy,” and “easy healthy lunch ideas.”

Nevada

At number eight is Nevada, with an average of 1,782 monthly searches per 100,000 residents, slightly behind Florida. Las Vegas alone features 69 restaurants categorized as healthy, according to TripAdvisor.

California

California claims the ninth spot, with an average of 1,703 monthly searches per 100,000 residents. The state has numerous health influencers, such as TikTok star @violet.cooks (based in San Francisco with 2.1 million followers), who shares healthy recipes and promotes a healthy lifestyle.

Virginia

Finally, Virginia secures the tenth place, with an average of 1,639 monthly searches per 100,000 residents. The Virginia Farmers Market Association reports the existence of 360 Farmers and Artisan Markets across the state, emphasizing the message of increasing access to fresh and healthy food.

Three States Where Folks Are Not Eating Well

Conversely, the research also revealed the three U.S. states least concerned with healthy eating:

Mississippi ranks as the least interested state in healthy eating, with only 914 monthly searches per 100,000 residents. Comparatively, Colorado residents search for healthy eating terms 176% more frequently than their Mississippi counterparts.

West Virginia follows closely as the penultimate state least interested in healthy eating, with 958 monthly searches per 100,000 residents. Colorado residents search for healthier eating habits more than double the frequency of West Virginia residents.

In third-to-last place is Alaska, with 1,008 monthly searches per 100,000 residents for healthy eating. According to the Alaska Department of Health, approximately two out of three adults in Alaska are classified as overweight or obese.

A spokesperson from Great Green Wall Health commented on the findings, stating, “Each month in the U.S., there are millions of searches related to healthy eating. This research provides valuable insights into the states from which these Google searches predominantly originate and highlights the regions that are actively pursuing healthier eating habits.”

The spokesperson further added, “According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 36.6% of Americans regularly consume fast food. While moderate fast food consumption is acceptable, it is crucial to balance it with a healthy and active lifestyle. The increasing interest in more nutritious. recipes and healthier eating options represents a significant step towards improving physical health and mental well-being.”
