Got kids? Teach them to cook! Makes them feel accomplished, it is a life skill, and everyone gets to eat! No downside. Here are 10 meals easy enough for kids to make on their own. Your microwave and blender are fairly safe tools (use your judgement, of course), and we give you guidance on steps that kids can help with that are age appropriate.
Nachos
The very first “hot” dish you can teach, even to young kids. Kids can grab a microwave safe container (we like Pyrex plates), load up with corn chips and shredded cheese, and microwave for about 1 minute. They can serve with jarred salsa, and add extras that they like, such as dollops of sour cream or prepared guacamole. Leftover shredded cooked chicken or warmed chili makes it more hearty. Here is a recipe idea.
Birthday Cake Bliss Balls
Energy Bites, Bliss Balls, whatever you call them, these no-bake treats are easy and fun to make. Kids learn how to read a recipe, measure ingredients, and get to use their hands and “play” with their food. And Rainbow sprinkles make everyone happy! Get the recipe for Birthday Cake Bliss Balls.
Tortilla Pepperoni Pizza
A simple and customizable pizza that can be made with tortillas, pizza sauce, cheese and pepperoni. Kids can learn how to spread sauce on tortillas, sprinkle cheese and pepperoni on top and bake them in the oven for about 10 minutes. They can also use different toppings like mushrooms, olives or pineapple. If your family likes polenta, you can also use prepared polenta rolls to make mini pizzas.
Scrambled Eggs
A popular breakfast item that only requires eggs, butter, salt and pepper. Kids can learn how to crack eggs, whisk them, and cook them in a skillet over low heat. They can also add cheese, ham, bacon or veggies for extra flavor and nutrition. Teaching moment for toast as well, using the toaster. Eggs are high protein and great snack food. Teach kids to make Hard Boiled Eggs, too.
Grilled Cheese Sandwich
A classic lunch food that can be made with bread, butter and cheese. Kids can learn how to butter bread, place cheese slices between them, and cook them in a skillet over medium heat until golden and melty. They can also experiment with different types of bread, cheese, and fillings like tomato, ham or bacon. Older kids can try making tomato soup, cutting grilled cheese into squares, and using them as grilled cheese croutons – in the soup!
Spaghetti & Meatballs
A child-friendly dinner that can be made with spaghetti, jarred sauce and frozen meatballs. Kids can learn how to boil water, cook pasta, heat sauce and meatballs in a pot or microwave and serve them together. They can also make their own meatballs – they love rolling the meat mixture into balls – or use fresh herbs and cheese to enhance the sauce. Here is a recipe, if they want to try from-scratch.
Yogurt Parfait
A no-cook snack or dessert that can be made with yogurt, fruit and granola. Kids can learn how to chop fruit, layer yogurt, fruit and granola in a glass or bowl. They can also use different flavors of yogurt, fruit and granola or add nuts, seeds or a drizzle of honey or maple syrup for extra crunch and sweetness. Overnight oats is another way to go.
Peanut Butter Banana Smoothie
A healthy drink that can be made with peanut butter, banana (we like frozen), ice, milk (or alt milk) and honey or maple syrup, if desired. Kids can learn how to peel and break bananas, measure ingredients, blend them together and serve. They can also use different types of nut butter, milk or sweeteners or add cocoa powder, vanilla extract or cinnamon for extra flavor. Grab those straws! If they want to venture into green smoothies, we have a recipe!
Taco In A Bag
A fun and portable way to enjoy tacos. Kids can learn how to cook ground beef, drain it, season it with taco seasoning, and serve it in individual bags of tortilla chips with lettuce, tomato, cheese, sour cream and salsa. This is known as “Frito Pie In A Bag” if you use those chips.
Microwave Chocolate Mug Cake
A quick and delicious dessert that can be made in a microwave. Kids can learn how to measure and mix flour, sugar, cocoa powder, baking powder, milk, oil and chocolate chips in a mug, and microwave it for about a minute. They can also top it with whipped cream, ice cream or more chocolate chips.
